Earth Day with Robuust's Founders

In our exclusive Earth Day interview with Niek and Job, we explore the meaning behind 'Design for Life' and our commitment to timeless, sustainable design. Learn about our materials, production methods, and future sustainability goals.

What does "Design for Life" mean to you as a brand?

Our goal is to design essential interior products that have to last a lifetime. Not only that they are still there after 30 years in terms of solidity, but also that the design is still relevant. That is why it is important to think carefully about the materials we use, how and where it is produced, the functionality but also about the timeless appearance and neutral colors.

How is timeless design aligned with sustainability?

We see timeless design in combination with a sense of minimalism as a good recipe for a more sustainable lifestyle. By buying less, you can invest more in the essentials of higher quality. The higher the quality in combination with a timeless design, the longer we can enjoy them. This decreases your carbon footprint significantly in contrast to fast-furniture.

How does Robuust minimize waste and reduce environmental impact during the production process?

We try to minimize waste by designing our products in a smart way, so we use all the materials and production methods in the most efficient way possible. We also let our products be produced locally so we have good control of the quality, can produce in small numbers and less transport is needed. Our beds are produced on-demand and are directly transported to our customers from the factory.

What materials do you use in your products and why do you choose them?

Steel is the basic material in most of our products, it is not only sustainable due to its solidity so that the product can last a very long time, but it is also recyclable, which contributes to a circular system. In principle, steel is never waste and can always be reused.

In addition, our wooden furniture consists of recycled cores with a veneer layer. This means that as few trees as possible need to be cut down and the raw materials are FSC certified. The textiles we work with are also made from 100% recycled fabrics, as residual waste from the industry.

What are your long-term sustainability goals as a brand?

Our goal is to remain as sustainable as possible in every step we take as a furniture brand. Beside that we hope to inspire people and help them choose sustainable alternatives in the interior brand with beautiful, timeless designs.
